The recent study by the University of Massachusetts has confirmed that the plan by Bernie Sanders the Democratic presidential candidate to pay for free college without raising the national debt could actually work. It is expected to cost between $60 – $75 billion to provide a free college education and Bernie Sanders proposes that a tax on Wall Street trading could be the solution.
The report from UMass showed that there was potential to generate new revenue of about $300 billion per year, which would be more than enough to cover the new plan. Those against this idea, feel that the new plan would limit the choice of colleges and bring an end to the private colleges as these establishments would have no option but to compete with the government funded free education. Regardless of this, the majority of people interviewed by 22News have shown full support of the idea.
