For many of you readers, it should not come as a surprise that climate change is one of the biggest threats to our world today. If we fail to control our emissions problems, our world as we know it will have changed drastically, and not for the better. If you think that only the NGO’s knew this back in the 1970’s, you would be highly mistaken. New research has been uncovered by the nonprofit Center of International Environmental Law. What it shows is startling. Esso, which is the forerunner to Exxon Mobil, knew that Greenhouse gasses caused climate changes, and they were even working on an electric car, sort of like a forerunner to today’s Tesla.
We all know that lobbyists engage in all sorts of shady political dealings. The beauty of hiring a lobbyist is that you can have someone else do things that your organization would be hesitant to be caught doing. This is exactly what the oil companies did by founding the American Petroleum Institute. Their goal was to create a political lobby for them, and I can say that it worked well. By the time that Ron Dunlop, who was president of Sun Oil, as well as the Chairman of The American Petroleum Institute at the time, testified before our esteemed members of Congress, he was able to convince them to significantly cut funding for electric vehicles on the basis that there were many patents in that scientific field. Sadly for the Oil companies, their own scientists performed essential research back in the 1970’s. What the research told them was that greenhouse gases were indeed causing climate change, In other terms, the oil companies lied to Congress and the American public, when they claimed that Gasoline and other carbon-based fuels were safe to use. Recently, though, this has all come back on their heads and now they are under investigation by several state Attorney Generals. It isn’t looking good for them, and hopefully, they will have to pay a harsh penalty. They do deserve it.
To conclude, this all shows a few things. Firstly, don’t believe a word that any large corporation says about safety. Secondly, you can try to play games, but eventually, you will get caught.
